Hours of Darkness

Literature Text
The thundering heavens bellow rage from above,
rainfall dousing the dark valley my feet quietly walk upon
Silent bursts of lightening splinter eclectic veins across the midnight sky,
producing moments of light within these hours of darkness
Polluted with red worries,
tainted black by dread,
chaotic thoughts break through the weakened damn
built of broken words and secret lies
My fortress is powerless to stop my troubles from spreading
like a cloud of grey suffocating the atmosphere of my inner most mind
Anguished affliction grips my heart, pulling, tugging, threatening
to snap its delicate thread bare strings
The flood gates are now wide open, never again to be closed
I am swept away, my feet no longer touching safe ground
The driving undercurrent swallows me whole,
and I disappear under the breaking waves without a sound
Gasping for air,
lost in open water,
I hold on with numb fingertips slowly losing grip,
each given inch a missing measurement of uncounted time
The mounting pressure is building,
pulsating like a second heart beat in this cage of ribs within my chest
I feel I will soon explode with every passing second
I do not take in breath
Please help
before this wicked current claims my mind,
trapping me under the quiet surface,
fating me to survive yet another endless night
My limbs are so tired, they become broken
like thin branches, swaying lifeless in the harsh tempest wind
Feeling my resolve begin to fade, I dig deeper,
pulling out what little will barely remains within
Breaking the surface, I work my aching lungs, struggling
to take in air as if breathing for the very first time
Every muscle strains, weak as brand new wings waking from a nascent sleep
I fight against gravity not to be swept away, just one slip and I will be lost to the deep
Weakly pulling myself to the raging water's edge,
body creeping slowly as the night
Clawing with hands raw from giving,
crawling on knees weak from kneeling, my weary body fails to carry on
I am falling apart slowly, crumbling like weathered stone aged by time,
trembling like a fading leaf freed from its dying vine
I cling to the earth, taking in its sweet damp scent,
shivering upon the cold ground on which my body lies
In a whisper, lips scarcely moving,
I pray to find shelter under the merciful wing of the majestic white dove
I am here so exhausted, I am waiting all alone, please hurry, please come...
I must outlast these hours of darkness
